Makers

One of the Aelin ranks.

Makers form the primary workforce of Aelin. They fulfil roles and needs in a variety of areas and industries, including supporting the other ranks. The majority of Makers are in Pairs, with a lesser number being Solos who require a lover instead, either of which offers them necessary companionship due to their inability to be alone. About 68% of Makers are Paired. The rank suzerain is a Pair known as the Sun and Moon Adomarains.

There are two career paths that Makers can choose from, venillion and orination. Pairs can choose either, however Solos can only be venillion unless they join a team with other Makers. There is no restriction on Pairs changing their career paths at any point between venillion and orination. Only about 2% of Makers are orination.

Makuary

The Makuary is a thirteen-storey cylindrical-shaped balazite stone tower situated in Eastley that is surrounded by a large hedge maze, known as the hedrinth, with a wide paved path leading up to the entrance.

Access to the various areas of the Makuary are gained via the avinx, an aperio bust of an Earth bird whose purpose is to ask riddles of those wishing to gain passage, which guard their respective doors. There is a large lobby on the ground floor immediately inside the main entrance, which Makers use as a gathering place. It has two doors on either end with avinx that lead into the stairwells. The lobby has windows that are large and made of stained glass, with plain flooring, and contains tables and benches

Double helix style staircases circle around on the inside of the building and the stairwells have strips of stained glass lit up with aperio and each stair has different patterns and designs across it themed to the sun or moons. The stairwells are also home to the truspond.

Other than the lobby on the ground floor and the top floor, which is the Adomaven, the Makuary houses rooms of varying sizes that can be booked and used by Makers for whatever purpose they might need, for example to plan a new venture or to have sex. There is also a restaurant on the sixth floor that non-Makers are typically unaware of. There is an observatory on the roof of the building.

Hedrinth

The Hedrinth is a labyrinthian hedge maze made up of tall gilisiuses that almost entirely encircles the Makuary and thereby separates it from the East District. The entrance to the maze can be found behind the Makuary and can be accessed without needing to enter the Makuary itself; the individual can just walk around the building and then enter the singular gap in the hedge.

A ward system ensures that no one is able to fly over the hedrinth.

Situated throughout the maze are small oagany trees called namree. The only way to access the namrees is to walk and know the direction.

Residence Block

Suzerain

The Adomarain's building is a two-storey cottage called Sun and Moon Cottage and is situated in an open space in the residential block surrounded by gardens and a white picket fence. The cottage has four bedrooms with ensuites, a kitchen, a dining room, a living room and a room for slightly more formal entertaining.

Maker

There are multiple Maker residence buildings in the block. Residence buildings are L-shaped and arranged in sets of four which surround a courtyard. The courtyards are landscaped, maintained and decorated by Makers according to an overall vote of all Makers in those sets of buildings.

Residence block grouping

Each residence building uses the corner of the L-shape to contain a stairwell from ground to top floor and a front desk with Makers working behind it. There are eleven floors, with twelve apartments per floor in each building, with the two single-bed apartments on each end of the L-shaped buildings being for Solos and those in mourame.

Pairs and Solos

Makers who are not in a Pair are Solos. There are two different types of Pair:

True Pairs
True Pairs are the ideal. A Maker's True Pair is a person essentially designed to be perfect for them, to balance and fit with them in order to create a whole.

Suited Pairs
Suited Pairs are put together by the Adomarains. A Paired Maker without a True Pair would be in a Suited Pair.

Makers have a flair relating to where their True Pair is; they know if their True Pair is dead, alive somewhere waiting to be found or have not yet been born. This is known as the True Question.

The name of a Pair is known as a pairame and is a composite of two words, each representing a member of the Pair, e.g. Rose Comet.

The name of a Solo is known as a solome and is two combined words representing the singular Maker, e.g. ZestyDetermination.

Adomarain Pair

Certain Makers possess the Adomarain flair, which allows them the chance of becoming a second chance True Pair. Technically they are still Suited, but their compatibility with their fellow Adomarain is 100%, as with their original True Pair.

Only those who can not be with their original True Pair can ever become Adomarains, even if they possess the Flair. The ideal is still the original True Pair.

If one of the Adomarains dies then they would join their original True Pairs' ribbon on an aetri. The remaining Adomarain would then stand down as they have had their second chance.

Suited Pairs

A Suited Pair is created by the Adomarains based on compatibility. The more compatible the Pair, the closer to the True Name the Pairame is. There is an element of interpretation around the concept of closeness, such as complementary food groups or an idea of happiness.

If the compatibility between two Makers is below 61% then they are not considered viable for Pairing. The maximum compatibility for Suited Pairs is 99%, as only True and Adomarain Pairs can have 100% compatibility.

Solos

If a Maker does not want to be part of a Pair, they can become a Solo instead. Solos are given a solome by the Adomarains, much like a Pair is given a pairame, however unlike a pairame it is solely theirs. A Solo can choose to have a Pair again at any time.

Solos always need a lover, as a way of filling the gap left by not having a Pair. There is a finite amount of time that a Solo can be without a lover or a relationship before their health and happiness begin to suffer. This can range from anything between a few days to the upper limit of nine years.

Insignia and Bracelets

Makers wear bracelets with insignia that symbolise either their pairame or solome. The bracelets are designed by the Adomarains. Each bracelet set is unique like the Pair or Solo. There is no limit to the design or the material used for bracelets or insignia.

Makers who are in mourame wear one plain, standardised white bracelet with a blank insignia.

A bracelet and insignia are replaced when Makers get a new Pair or become a Solo.

Pairs wear bracelets with insignia that symbolise their pairame. The bracelets can have different designs, for example the insignia might be on a plate connected to the main bracelet via a loop link, or the bracelet might be a chain with the insignia on a pendant. The Pair always wear their bracelets on opposite wrists. The first named part of the pairame wears the bracelet on their left wrist, so 'Rose' wears his on the left. The second named part of the pairame wears the bracelet on their right wrist, so 'Gale' wears his on the right.

Solos wear a bracelet on each wrist to indicate that they are their own Pair. Solos have their solome split across each insignia with the first word on the left and the second on the right. For example, for BesottedVanity, 'Besotted' would be on the left and 'Vanity' on the right.

Orination and Venillion

Orination spend their working hours on Earth and are managed by Facilitators. Their work involves living temporarily on Earth in order to facilitate Celestials with the harvesting flair. They are required to work in teams of a Pair minimum and must sequester in order to complete their work.

Venillion are Ephillion-based only and choose work accordingly. They have two options available to them; they can apply to work at an existing business, or they can start a venture of their own as a Solo, in a Pair or even as a group. They find a profession that suits them. A venillion venture is regularly named after the Pair or Solo, e.g. a Pair called Fire Pixies would call the cafe they own 'Fire Pixies' or a Solo called BrashCourage would call the cafe he owns 'BrashCourage'.

Devaming

The process of the Adomarains bringing a new Pair together and revealing to them their pairame, or bestowing a Solo with their solome.

When a Maker wants a Pair, they start by visiting the Adomarains who then try to match them with other non-Paired Maker. This typically involves a conversation in the Adomaven with the Adomarains. Afterwards the Adomarains will find someone they know will be a good fit based on compatibility and then they arrange a meeting for those individuals.

After two Makers are introduced and told their compatibility percentage, the Adomarains will go through the process of devameing them, which involves a small ceremony held in the Adomaven which consists of giving them a new unique pairame, insignia and bracelets. The ceremony is then moved outside where the Pair are then asked to plant their namree in the Hedrinth. The new Pair put meaningful items on and under the namree to represent themselves becoming part of the new Pair.

Dissoair

A Pair can end by the death of one or both individuals, the discovery of a more compatible Suited Pair or by one of the individuals finding their True Pair. This is known as the process of dissoair. A Maker whose Pair has recently dissolved is known to be in mourame. When a Pair ends due to death, a ceremony called a remembrair is also held.

Mourame

A Maker whose Pair or relationship with their lover has recently dissolved is known to be in mourame. The length of time a Maker will be in mourame depends on the individual and their circumstances, however a Maker is unable to be without a Pair or lover for long. The maximum amount of time a Maker can be alone is nine years.

An aelinuan's soul always returns to its aetri of origin, however True Pairs are the exception because if each member was born from a different aetri, the soul of the second to die will instead go to the first's ribbon even if it is on a different aetri.
